CIMAT is an inter-departimental center at the University of Catania. It has been devised with the aim to bring together scientists of several applied sciences whose research activity needs the use of advanced Mathematics.

Angelo Marcello Anile

Angelo Marcello AnileCIMAT has more than 50 members and it is entitled to prof. Angelo Marcello Anile. He was been full professor of Mathematical Physics at the University of Catania until the year 2007 when he early passed away.
He graduated at the Scuola Superiore of Pisa in the 1971 and he got the PhD title at the Oxford University, supervisor Denis Sciama, in that time one of the most famous astrophysicist all over the world.
His research interests ranged from General Relativity to Applied and Industrial Mathematics, in particular modeling and simulation in micro and nano-electronics, and also included fuzzy logic, neuronal network and optimization.
Authors of about one hundred publications. Particularly known the monographs Relativistic Fluids and Magnetofluids published by the Cambridge University Press.

He created a school of applied mathematics at the University of Catania. Now, among his students, there are several full and associate professors and researchers, with a permanent position in various Italian universities.
He was a man with a wide and versatile culture, a gentleman of other times, a scientific mentor for those who had the fortune to share with him the joy to do research together.
